The right courses to pursue to achieve your goal
1.WHY MAJORITY OF TEACHERS WANT TO TEACH AT THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Views from some Senior High School teachers indicate that teachers who want to teach till retirement should try all their possible best to teach at the SHS.
Every teacher at the basic school level in one way or the other is a form master or classroom teacher but does not get any form of allowance but form masters, housemasters, senior housemasters, and mistresses at the senior high school receive allowances.
Aside from that, the government pays motivation allowances to all senior high school teachers of which Junior High School (JHS) and primary do not enjoy. Moreover, there is an intervention allowance paid to teachers in senior high school teachers only.
Furthermore, in the SHS, breakfast, and lunch are served every day to teachers. Some additional benefit includes free accommodation-teachers are provided with bungalows.
As a matter of fact, Basic school teachers go home empty-handed during Christmas vacation but this is the opposite to teachers at the SHS. Incentives such as rice, oil, and some minerals are distributed to teachers at the Senior High School level during this period.
It will interest you to know that at the basic school level, more contact hours are spent than the senior high school on daily basis. These policies change as a teacher moves the ladder to the college of education and university as well. Therefore, any individual who wants to teach at a higher level should pursue better courses and advance yourself to fit in the SHS and colleges as well.
2. WHY MINORITY OF TEACHERS WANTS TO TEACH AT THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Teachers prefer to teach at the primary and junior high school levels due to numerous reasons. The salary scale is the same as compared to the SHS some but other teachers have genuine reasons why they prefer teaching at the basic school. many believe that teaching at the basic level fetch you more than incentives received at the SHS because you will get ample time to do some business or project which will fetch you multiple incomes.
3. THE RIGHT COURSES TO PURSUE TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL
All training colleges/colleges of education in Ghana are currently running degree programmes which is Bachelor of Education in Basic Education (B.Ed.). this limits you to the primary or JHS after completion. However, teachers who hold a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) and have an interest in teaching at the basic level should choose the above-mentioned course. Currently, UCC has introduced a one-year top-up for such individuals.
On the other hand, individuals with SHS interest must be trained in a specific course of study. The general course of study is a Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education). Some of the courses individuals can offer at this stage include:
B.Ed. English Language
B.Ed. Social Studies and the likes
However, readers of this article are to note that the policy at hand is that very soon:
Degree holders will teach at the basic schools
Masters holders will teach at the SHS. That is when you do not offer skirt and blouse courses.
Individuals with M.Phil. will lecture at the colleges.
Ph.D. holders will lecture at the university.
Choose courses you have maximum control off. Do not take that you want to teach at the SHS by hook or crook. This may push you to divert to a course that will enable you teach at the SHS. You may acquire the certificate alright but your delivery and competencies will be questionable.
