The Ghana national service scheme has been in existence since 23rd September 1980 in accordance with constitutional act enacted by parliament to which the scheme shall be applied to any person who: is a citizen of Ghana and has attained the age of eighteen years and more.
The National Service programme is a compulsory one year service required of graduate students at a time deployment.
A coalition of graduate students is calling and pleading on the Government to rescuer the national service scheme from its mess and failure to contribute to the sustainability and development of our country Ghana. Fresh graduate is mandated to do one year National Service and the scheme has refused to review its aim and objectives for its establishment.
Today’s modern world, National Service personnel are being paid GH 559 per month and we advocate the basis that, the hectic and stressful constraint confronted by National Service Personnel are too much and we, therefore, call on Government to increased National Service allowance for graduate Students deserves better than GHc 559. To highlight some challenges confronted by National Service Personnel, rental fees demanded by Landlords, Transportation, shelter, food, and many more are expenses made from this GHc559 respectively.
Mr. President, How can a National Service Personnel afford to pay rent and not to talk of other expenses from one region to another region where he/she does not know anybody where he/she is being posted. National Service Personnel’s are a citizen but not spectators for that reason National Service Personnel deserve a share of the National Cake respectively. However, the number two objective of the National Service Scheme is to undertake projects design to combat hunger, Illiteracy, disease, and unemployment. In view of the objectives of the National Service Scheme, a coalition of graduate students want to inform the Stakeholders and Government attention that most of the students are potential entrepreneurs who need just some small amount of money, to begin with, their own businesses and how can Ghc 559 be used to fight against hunger? How can National Service Personnel use GHc559 to fight against unemployment? On these grounds, National Service Personnel can say that the main purpose for the establishment of the scheme has fallen into an unknown pit and National Service Personnel is calling on Government to increase the National Service allowances by 20% so that at least National Service Personnel can save some amount to ease their future dreams.
