World-renowned U.S based music magazine and charting company Billboard has ranked the best local artistes in Ghana and dancehall king Shatta Wale finds himself in the coveted number one spot.
Wale finished first ahead of Sarkodie in 2nd, Stonebwoy in 3rd and Diana Hamilton in a surprise 4th.
Takoradi based singer-songwriter Kofi Kinaata rounded up the top 5.
Billboard used streaming figures from YouTube over the period of a year – May 1 2019 – May 1 2020 to calculate their figures.
During the period, Shatta Wale had 13.2m views on Youtube, followed by Sark on 11.8m, Stonebwoy on 7.8m, Hamilton on 6.4m and Kinaata on 4.6m.
Billboard’s list was titled the ‘most-watched homegrown artistes across Africa’.
Concerning Shatta Wale the magazine wrote: “Wale’s 2019 album is called Wonder Boy, and the singer-songwriter and actor seems determined to live up to that name. The country’s two biggest political parties have used his songs in campaigns; his 2018 album, Reign, hit No. 6 on Billboard’s Top World Albums chart; and in April, he organized the online Faith Concert to cheer up fellow Ghanaians during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
