Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza, aged 55, has reportedly died of a heart attack.
According to a statement by the government released on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, the outgoing President was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell.
His condition is said to have improved but on Monday, June 8, 2020, he had a cardiac arrest with efforts to revive him proving unsuccessful.
President Nkurunziza who has been in power since 2005, was due to step down in August this year.
In 2015, widespread protests and violence greeted his decision to run for a third, five-year term.
