NUGS Threatens To Demonstrate In Five Days Over Unpaid Student Loans

President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Isaac Jay Hyde has served notice that the students union shall embark on a demonstration if the student loans are not paid in five days.

Speaking today at a press conference organized by NUGS to address their concerns regarding the Public Universities Bill currently before parliament and other issues, Isaac Hyde mentioned that “as we speak, some 2,000 students under the scheme haven’t been paid the first semester monies they applied for; talkless of the loans for the second semester which hasn’t even been issued.”

The president noted that they do not take delight in addressing press conferences after a press conference to repeat the same issue.

Last semester, a group calling itself “Aggrieved Students Loan Beneficiaries” threatened to embark on a demonstration of the students’ loans were not paid. Subsequent to that, some students received their loans and some did not receive theirs, meaning that there are still a considerable number of students who have both their loans of first and second semesters in arrears.

The Head of Public Relations at the Trust Fund a few weeks ago revealed on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers that they were unable to process the loans because of the lockdown which had meant that most of their staff were barred from going to work in pursuance of the Executive Instrument imposing the lockdown. It is not clear now what is causing the delay since the lockdown has been lifted over a month ago.

The president of NUGS also revealed that over 2000 students are currently owing school fees which may prevent them from writing their end of semester exams.
