My Dear Teachers,

The global pandemic of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has resulted in the closure of schools across the country over the past few weeks, along with significant disruption to our lives. This has brought home to parents and guardians, the significant role that you play in the lives of Ghanaian learners. My team and I wish to salute your gallant efforts.

During this period of uncertainty, you no doubt will worry about when schools will reopen to enable students get back to the classroom for you to deliver your lessons for the rest of the academic year. On our part, the decision to reopen the schools will be determined by the professional advice received from our public health experts.

As we await such guidance, I urge you to continue to upgrade your skills and broaden your knowledge base in your own way, and also to pay close attention to social distancing and the necessary hygiene protocols. This is also an opportunity for you to network with your peers in other jurisdictions to share ideas, learn and perhaps adapt solutions that will improve the delivery of education in these restrictive times.

As teachers and respected members of your communities, you are also uniquely placed to educate your fellow citizens to help beat this pandemic. I ask you to support your communities using available platforms to improve your professional standard as well as support your students and their families where possible.

I also take this opportunity to implore the leadership of the various unions associated with education to support their members in any way possible to maintain the confidence in this noble profession.

Please, do not hesitate, as you have always done, to get in touch with me for any discussions, clarifications and suggestions that will improve standards of education across board. My doors are always open.

I am confident that together we shall overcome, and I look forward to the resumption of face-to-face academic work when it is safe to do so.

May God continue to bless our homeland, Ghana.

Sgd.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh
